Charting Our Path: Celebrating 50 Years of Black Studies

The department of Black Studies continued to grow and make its presence known on campus through its scholarship, events, guest lecturers, and programs within the community.

In 2021 the UNO Libraries and the Department of Black Studies were awarded funds through the UNO’s Strategic Investment in Social Justice, Inequality, Race, and Class initiative for 2021-2023. This provided seed funds for the Charting Our Path: Celebrating 50 Years of Black Studies, which honors the 50th anniversary of the Department of Black Studies in 2021-2022 through campus and community speakers, exhibits, and events as well as supporting expanding research, creative activity, and open access instructional resources. Additional support for Charting Our Path was funded by Humanities Nebraska and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment.

A highlight of the project was the Charting Our Path: Celebrating the Omaha 54 and 50 Years of the Department of Black Studies event held on July 28, 2021. Members of the Omaha 54 and their families were invited to UNO to be honored through speeches, exchanging of memories and stories, a pop-up display of archival materials about the sit-in, and a plaque honoring each member of the Omaha 54. See photos and watch the event on the Omaha 54 and 50 Years of Black Studies Event Recap page.

As part of the “Charting Our Path: Celebrating 50 Years of Black Studies,” the Black Studies department has hosted an incredible series of webinars, on topics relating to Black history, scholarship, art, politics, and Omaha.  Watch this amazing content, available on the Charting Our Path: Celebrating 50 Years of Black Studies (1971-2021) webpage and the UNO College of Arts and Sciences Youtube page.
